SQL Super Over

About SQL Super Over

Learn SQL through IPL

SQL Super Over is a free browser game that teaches SQL through a cricket tournament. You pick one of 10 franchises and play 10 matches. Each match is a question about a fictional league: teams, players, matches, batting and bowling stats. You win a match by writing a SQL query that returns exactly the right rows.

How it works

  • The tournament has 10 matches: six group games, two quarter-finals, a semi-final and the final. Concepts get harder as you go, from SELECT and WHERE to window functions and CTEs.
  • Before each match there's a quick toss and a pitch report with a short primer on that match's concept.
  • You can run your query as often as you like. Each match gives you 3 submits and 2 optional hints that cost points.
  • Points come from a base of 100 per match, a speed bonus and a first-attempt bonus. Win first time without hints to earn Man of the Match.
  • About 30% of matches bring a cricket event: Rain delay (one hint is free in this match); DRS review (after a wrong submit you may review once for one extra attempt (−20 points)); Powerplay (double speed bonus if you win within the first 2 minutes); Free hit (your first wrong submit in this match doesn't use up an attempt); Impact player (swap to a different question of the same concept and difficulty (−30 points)).
  • After the tournament you get a skill report across 9 SQL concepts, and you can challenge friends to play your exact question set.

Who it's for

  • Students and freshers preparing for data analyst interviews
  • Working professionals moving into analytics who want hands-on SQL practice
  • Cricket fans who would rather learn with scorecards than with spreadsheets of sales data
  • Teachers and bootcamps looking for a fun, free SQL warm-up for a class

Frequently asked questions

Is SQL Super Over free?
Yes. The game, the leaderboards and the SQL through cricket cheat sheet are free. You only need a free Skillancy account so we can save your progress.
Do I need to know SQL already?
No. The first matches only need SELECT and WHERE. Every match has a pitch report with a short primer and two optional hints, and difficulty rises gradually up to window functions and CTEs.
Is the data real IPL data?
No. Every player, match and statistic is fictional and generated for the game. Team names and home grounds are used for flavour only. The game is fan-made and not affiliated with the IPL or any franchise.
Which SQL does the game use?
Your queries run on a real Postgres database inside your browser, so standard PostgreSQL syntax works, including JOINs, GROUP BY, CASE WHEN, window functions and CTEs.
Will I see the same questions again?
No. Every question you see is logged and new tournaments only use questions you haven't had. Challenge runs are the one exception: friends play the challenger's exact set so the contest is fair.
How does Challenge a friend work?
After a tournament, create a challenge link and share it. Anyone who opens it plays the same 10 questions with the same match events, once each, and a live mini leaderboard ranks everyone.
What is shown publicly about me?
Only your first name and last initial, your team and your score. Phone numbers and emails never appear on leaderboards, challenges or certificates. You can choose to show your full name on your certificate.
